An internal martial art; Xing refers to Shape\Form, Yi refers to the Mind-Heart or Intention (the Will), Chuan refers to Fist. Foundation practice is posture\stance, footwork & the 5 Element Fists. Our root stance is "Santishi - three body posture" from which the 5 basic fists are trained. The 5 basic fists are related to the 5 Phases of Chinese Philosophy & Medicine with the same theory and inter-relationships. Practicing each of these 5 fists and their associated sound benefits the health of the related internal organ. The 5 fundamental fists\movements\actions\patterns\energies\phases are: Pi - Metal (Splitting), Zuan - Water (Drilling), Beng - Wood (Expanding), Pao - Fire (Exploding), Heng - Earth (Crossing). The way of mutual production among the Five Phases is: Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood, Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, and Earth generates Metal. The way of mutual conquest is: Metal conquers Wood, Wood conquers Earth, Earth conquers Water, Water conquers Fire, and Fire conquers Metal. Train your physical power and mind-intent with the basic 5-Element drills repeated correctly again and again and again. Xing Yi should look and be clean, crisp, neat, precise, exact. Body movement initiates from the dantien, hands & feet arrive simultaneously. Your whole body works as one concentrated unit. Qi/Mind/Intent continues, project your energy on through the target. Also train standing meditation, sensitivity drills, energy projection and proper postural alignment with body awareness to “feel” your energy running. You try to develop spontaneous power, neutralizing power, very free-flowing power; a “whatever is required” type of energy. More practice, more time, more experience help accumulate this power. Meditation is key at this stage. The heart/mind/shape become unified – alignment of body, mind and spirit. The ongoing training process is one of refining your power and energy feel, fine-tuning so to speak. Proper guidance and complete instruction from a qualified master is best. Our Xing Yi Quan also offers: linking forms, 2-person drills & forms, 12 Animals, various solo routines, as well as weapons. Historically a battlefield art as well as an individual "martial" art system. |
