I'm tearing into the third in a series of fictional books about Genghis Khan and his conquest of the Asian continent.
I highly reccommend the series ('Wolf of the Plains', 'Lords of the Bow' and 'Bones of the Hills' all by Conn Iggulden). Each book covers a different period of Ghenghis' life and is packed with facts about the Mongols (they could ride using only their knees to control the horse, and shoot a bow at full gallop - they could live off only the blood and milk of their horses for days at a time).
The books are also a fascinating view of Genghis' leadership and philsophy - and there are many observations of custom, tact, strategy, and conflict. Awesome stuff.
To quote the author/Genghis: "Some men tell you they seek happiness...Sheep are happy on the plains and hawks are happy in the air...for us, happiness is a small thing, one to be discounted in a man's life. We strive and suffer because we know through those things that we are alive.."
